Rancho Palos Verdes House #1

[info]fynoda and I wandered along the coast road. Our intent was to drive past the remains of Marineland of the Pacific and then find the wreck of the SS Dominator, which went aground off Whites Point. We never made it there. Instead we found two victims of the Portuguese Bend Slide area. Like the area around the Sunken City (San Pedro), the land is meeting the sea somewhat faster than the residents appreciate. In Los Angeles, one of the most expensive areas in the county is by the Pacific Ocean. The better the view, the higher the value. We were in million dollar territory. The slides have reduced the value of this and a second home we found.

Supposedly Finnish pill-box, built in 20th-30th. Located in Leningradskaya oblast' (near Saint Petersburg ), around Vaskelovo village. I suppose this pillbox might be part of the front row of Finnish defense line ( Mannerheim's line)

Beautiful showcase

If you're in the Chicago area, head to the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E Washington St) for a great showcase of Stephen Wilkes' Ellis Island photos. 2 galleries of large, vibrant prints.

I happened to stumble upon it yesterday =)

Abandoned putt putt

Hi there. Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've long been fascinated with buildings in various sorts of decay.
The reclaiming of nature and entropy.

And while I've been taking these photos for years, I've never really shared them.

Which is just silly.

So, with minimal preamble, here's the first of many from a couple years ago.

An abandoned putt putt golf place in the city.

Salton City (Southern California Desert)

  • Aug. 17th, 2008 at 3:03 PM
Last week I went down to San Diego to visit a friend and she told me about this awesome city that was almost totally abandoned. We drive around 3 hours through the mountains and the desert to get to this completely unreal place, Salton City. According to Wikipedia, it was designed in the 1950's as a resort community, but the increasing salinity and pollution of the Salton Sea doomed it from the start, since the City was centered around the Marina. Still, a few people linger, from what I've seen most people live in run down houses and mobile homes.

I suggest you check out the google map of the area. First look at the map view to see all that was planned for the city, then switch to satellite to see how little of it is actually inhabited.

Anyways, here's some photos. I'm only an amateur, so sorry if they're not spectacular. I'd say they're worth a glance through though:
